Top 3 MMA Gyms in Austin Texas

1. John’s Gym

When looking for the top MMA Gym’s in Austin, Texas, you’re bound to find John’s Gym on that list.

Situated in Austin, Texas, John’s Gym prides itself on its friendly environment and accessible programs.

That doesn’t mean you should brush John’s Gym off as a place purely for casual fitness.

Co-owners John Ramseier and Jasmine Choksi focus on Brazilian Jiu jitsu and personal training respectively.  These two perfectly exemplify the gym's mantra of pursuing physical fitness, whether through martial arts of personal training and treat both disciplines with equal respect.

They have a large variety of programs focused on different martial arts disciplines like Muay Thai, Boxing and Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Coupled with the women’s self-defense and the Kids Jiu jitsu classes, John’s Gym positions itself very well as a family friendly gym that caters to all skill levels.

Those uninterested in specialist martial arts can take part in the MMA classes that focus on blending grappling and striking techniques led by Darrin Lillian, a 3rd degree Black Belt in BJJ who has been training MMA since 1996.

The shining star of this gym is the highly credentialed BJJ staff. When combined, John’s Gym likely has the most credentialed BJJ staff in Austin. Offering both Gi and Nogi styles, they claim they are the only gym in Austin that can guarantee you will always be taught by one of the three Black Belt’s they have on staff. An opportunity that any BJJ enthusiast will find hard to pass up.

The BJJ prowess of the gym is further enhanced by the knowledge that all the instructors once owned or ran their own gyms before coming together to form John’s Gym, combining all their years of training and competition experience.

Technical sparring is held regularly for those more committed to striking, giving members a safe place to practice new techniques with supervision and let them get a taste of full contact exchanges.

John’s Gym may very well be one of the best MMA Gym’s in Texas, bringing together a nice balance of specialist martial arts, general MMA and classic fitness training. It’s a welcoming place that accepts everyone at any skill level and lets you choose your level of commitment.

2.10th Planet

Founded by Eddie Bravo, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is an extremely high-quality Mixed Martial Arts gym that teaches diverse set of disciplines and techniques.

The first thing that stands out about 10th Planet is Eddie Bravo’s Nogi BJJ system. Derived from his training with multiple time champion Jean Jaques Machado (whose lineage and record alone should make you pay attention), 10th Planet employs a BJJ structure that is more conducive to MMA.

As this style of BJJ as a foundation, the gym also offers lessons in Muay Thai and MMA, making this a gym that is very much focused on mixing different disciplines together in a practical and effective way.

The coaching staff are very highly decorated in their respective disciplines. Head coach Gabe Tuttle is currently ranked via Flo Grappling among the Top 10 in the world at 135 lbs. Curtis Hembroff, owner of 10th Planet ATX and former head coach has a 5-0 MMA record. The Striking coach is Andrew Craig, a former UFC fighter who helps round out the deeply credentialed MMA staff at 10 Planet ATX.

Although 10th Planet ATX is open to everyone, you can tell by its impressive staff and long lineage of championship level tutelage that is geared more towards those with a deep interest in all aspects of MMA.

More than just a gym, 10th Planet ATX holds multiple seminars and tournaments for students to take their martial arts education to a higher level. Casuals are certainly welcome, but it’s the hardcores who will get the most rewarding experience from everything on offer at 10th Planet ATX.

3. Team Rabadi

Team Rabadi holds a place in our top 3 MMA gyms in Austin, Texas due to its excellent facilities, varied programs and family friendly environment.

Sporting and impressive 6,000 sq ft facility in Pflugerville, Team Rabadi is owned and run by Prof Robby Rabadi. With over 20 years of martial arts experience, Prof Rabadi uses his wealth of knowledge in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to offer both Gi and Nogi classes to all ages.

Muay Thai classes at Team Rabadi’s gym are open to all ages and skill-levels, giving people the chance to get a taste of Mixed Martial Arts.

Though training is offered for both disciplines, it must be noted that Team Rabadi doesn’t offer any actual MMA classes. Depending on your needs or personal goals, this may not have much impact on your decision to join. However, if you are specifically looking for a more comprehensive take on MMA I.e., learning how to blend striking and grappling arts; you might be better off looking elsewhere.

Where Team Rabadi really shines is in the positive attitude that permeates throughout the gym. If you spend any time on their social channels or YouTube, you will instantly see a focus on using Martial Arts for self-improvement.

Mental health is as much a focus as physical health to Team Rabadi. Their aim is to build confidence and discipline by teaching people the skills to defend themselves, improve their physical fitness and in turn improve their lives.

It is especially encouraging to see that they have a big focus on teaching kids. Instilling all the benefits that Martial Arts can bring to people early on, with a sincere goal of improving people's lives.

Team Rabadi may not be focused too heavily on MMA as a discipline, but it’s strong offerings in both BJJ and Muay Thai still make it a great gym for those looking to train in both the stand-up and ground-game.

Where it sets itself apart is the impeccable quality of their facilities and the drive to use martial arts as a positive force in people's lives. Through Martial Arts Team Rabadi teaches the benefits of physical and mental health to people of all ages.
