Top 3 MMA Gyms in Pheonix Arizona

1. The MMA Lab

The MMA Lab is not just one of the best MMA Gyms in Pheonix Arizona but the whole world.

After being established in 2007, the MMA Lab has quickly grown into one of the most prominent gyms on the planet. Its stable of UFC and Bellator fighters is a testament to the elite level of training on offer.

Formner UFC and WEC Champion Benson Henderson has been a mainstay at the gym since it opened and is currently part of the coaching staff, proving you will only be taught by the absolute best.

In 2018 the facilities had a huge upgrade, expanding the gym and increasing the quality of all its equipment. There is a full-sized cage, striking room, grappling room, weight training room and even a room for short-term childcare for busy parents who need some help while they get in their workout.

Adult lessons are focused on kickboxing and BJJ, with both GI and No-Gi training. Strength and conditioning classes are also available for those more focused on getting in shape over refining their skills.

Kids' classes cover all the same ground as the adults but with the addition of boxing and wrestling specific classes, helping young fighters refine their skills from an early age. Of course, like most good MMA gyms they don’t just teach martials arts but also discipline and respect – lessons that will serve you well in and out of the cage.

All ages and skill levels are welcome at the MMA Lab, with free trials available for those still on the fence.

If you want to surround yourself with the best of the best, whether it’s for motivation along your fitness journey or to learn from some of the best fighters to ever do it, MMA Lab will welcome all comers with open arms.

2. Legion MMA

Legion MMA is a smaller gym with a great selection of martial arts programs for all ages and skill levels.

Head coach Daniel Madrid is a BJJ Black Belt with an MMA record of 14 wins and only 4 losses. He brings his wealth of experience to the gym, usually heading up the BJJ program.

Mario Velez Jr. Is the Head Striking Coach. With over 10 years of experience training amateurs and professionals, Mario’s focus is on traditional kickboxing but is also noted to have excellent game planning skills.

Classes are varied and spread out well with each class tending to focus either on fitness or technique. For example, they hold boxing and kickboxing cardio classes geared toward general health and fitness but also hold the same classes but with a focus on technique.

It’s a well thought out and clean separation of classes, meaning if you are just getting back into the gym you know to start with a cardio class. As you become more familiar with basic techniques it might inspire you to try the technique class and push your understanding a bit further. This is a really great way to introduce newcomers to martial arts as opposed to mixing everything into one which can be very intimidating for the uninitiated.

If you are undecided, Legion MMA offer an extremely generous free first week trial. They don’t even ask for your credit card details! Simply walk in and sign up for the one-week free trial and test what they have to offer for yourself.

3. Strong Heart Academy

Opened by Mike Martin, former student of Joe Moreira, Strong Heart Academy is an MMA gym with a focus on building community, skills and lifelong bonds through martial arts.

The primary focus at this gym is on BJJ. After many years of passing on the lessons of his mentor Joe Moreira, Mike Martin met and befriended Caio Terra. After some time, he then joined the Caio Terra Association, adopting his specific BJJ program and adding a new layer to his BJJ mentorship.

Lessons are divided into BJJ and MMA. They don’t offer any Muay Thai or boxing classes, instead opting to teach MMA through the lens of grappling. That means they have a much more refined focus on transitioning from stand-up to the ground and how to optimize your footwork to enable slick transitions from striking to grappling.

Those looking to hone their striking technique are probably not going to get what they want at Strong Heart Academy. But for those looking to get fit, join a friendly community or fully commit to the grappling arts, Strong Heart Academy will be happy to have you.
