Top 3 MMA Gyms in San Antonio Texas

1. Ronin MMA

Ronin MMA lands a spot on the Top 3 MMA Gyms in San Antonion due to its unique setup and incredible staff.

Opened in 2015 by veterans and MMA Pros Felecia Bannister and Debbie Garcia, with the ambitious goal of creating a gym that could work arounds the specific needs and capabilities of women and military veterans. Sadly, Felecia Bannister passed away only 2 months after the gym opened. Although the circumstances are tragic, Felecia was able to fulfill her dream of opening her own MMA gym and Debbie Garcia carries on that legacy to this day.

All of the essential MMA disciplines are covered at Ronin MMA, with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai being the focus. There are also MMA specific classes to help those looking to blend together their striking and grappling skills into a more cohesive skillset.

What makes Ronin MMA truly standout for its competitors is its focus on helping military and police veterans. They do this in several different ways, showing an absolute commitment to their cause, unlike any other MMA gym we have come across.

Almost all of the staff are veterans, instantly giving them an insight into the problems that many who have served face. They also have many different avenues to get discounted prices on equipment and lessons for veterans, while supporting many different charity organizations along the way.

What is most unique about their commitment to training veterans is their ability to adjust classes to meet your physical requirements. Whether it be a persistent injury or a more severe disability, the instructors at Ronin MMA are there to cater their classes to your needs, to ensure that you get the most out of every class.

Being able to adjust lessons to meet the physical needs of the student is incredibly impressive and is clear evidence of their in-depth knowledge of MMA as a whole.

Just because the focus of the gym is helping veterans, don’t let it deter you from paying them a visit. Ronin MMA is open to all. No matter your age or skill level, you are welcome and can benefit from the wealth of experience and compassion at this gym.

2. Dominion MMA

As one of the most complete and modern MMA gyms in San Antonio, Dominion MMA easily earns itself a place as one of the top 3 MMA gyms in San Antonio.

All MMA disciplines are on offer at Dominion MMA, each with an equal focus and talented coaching staff.

Typically, MMA gyms focus on one specific martial art as its foundation. In contrast, Dominion MMA is a pure MMA gym that focuses its energies equally spread across the core disciplines. That includes; Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No Gi Wrestling and MMA classes.

Coaching staff is equally varied across the martial arts, with each instructor having ample experience in their respective disciplines.

Dominion MMA is a modern gym through and through. They have a well-spaced facility with all of the equipment you’d expect; from a heavy bag to machines, to a full-sized MMA cage, they have it all covered. They even have app-based sign ins like most modern fitness gyms, so you can just check-in and get started with your workout.

They promote the strong sense of community they’ve built at their gym and invite anyone of any skill level to join. Be aware this is an adult only gym, with no kids' classes available as of writing. This can be a big plus for some who are looking to stay clear of the more family focused gyms and join a group of people of a similar age and with similar interests.

3. Brazilian Top Team

Started by Murilo Bustamante in 2000, Brazilian Top Team is, hands down, one of the best MMA gyms in San Antonio.

Bustamante is the first ever UFC belt holder and a world champion of Jiu-Jitsu back in 1999. His incredible experience in both MMA and pure BJJ, results in a team leader that has endless amounts of knowledge to share with his students.

Of course, as the gym name suggests, Brazilian Top Team is predominantly focused on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The majority of classes are focused on grappling in one way or another. Most classes consist of traditional BJJ Gi training but there are also No Gi and wrestling classes available for those looking to expand their grappling portfolio.

Muay Thai and traditional kickboxing classes are available every day for those interested in striking. Be aware, that although we would consider Brazilian Top Team to be an MMA gym, there is a heavy focus on grappling.

When you see the records of the BJJ coaches at Brazilian Top Team, you will quickly understand why they lean so heavily into grappling over striking.

Head Coach is currently Diego Gamonal Nogueira, a 4th Degree Black Belt under Professor Ricardo Marques. His competition record is quite astounding. Just trying to list the competitions he came 1st in would take up this entire article, and that’s before we get into his top 3 finishes. His earliest competition win goes all the way back to 2000, proving he has decades of proving ability to share with his students.

The mission at Brazilian Top Team, like any good MMA gym, is not just to improve people's health and fitness but to improve their lives through instilling discipline and enhancing confidence. Doors are open to all ages and skill levels, with lessons for children starting as early as 3 years old.
